Dear HRDC members,
The Hybrid Rice Development Consortium is pleased to invite your organization to participate in the 8th International Hybrid Rice Symposium (IHRS) on 18-19 October 2023. IHRS is a premier event organized by HRDC to bring together members and hybrid rice experts and representatives from the public and private sector to discuss, promote, and advance hybrid rice research and technologies.
This year, IHRS will be a flagship event of the 6th International Rice Congress (IRC 2023), the largest gathering and forum of rice-based food systems stakeholders in the world. Co-hosted by the International Rice Research Institute and the Philippine Department of Agriculture, the Congress will be held in Manila, Philippines from 16-19 October 2023. To attend IHRS, you must register to be a delegate of the International Rice Congress.
In addition, the HRDC Annual Meeting 2023 will be held the next day, October 20, at IRRI Headquarters in Laguna, Philippines. For members who will attend IRC and IHRS, HRDC will make arrangements to bring you to IRRI Headquarters to participate in the annual meeting. More information about the meeting will be provided soon.

HRDC members are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to attend the three events - the International Rice Congress, the International Hybrid Rice Symposium, and the HRDC Annual Meeting. Pre-register your interest to attend IHRS and the HRDC Annual Meeting through this Google Form in order to determine the expected member attendance and plan the activities accordingly.

Convened by HRDC, the International Hybrid Rice Symposium is a milestone gathering of HRDC members and hybrid rice stakeholders from across the globe. Bringing together scientific experts, government leaders and policymakers, and the private sector, IHRS is a major multisectoral platform to advance hybrid rice development and dissemination.

Previous editions of IHRS were held in Changsha, China (1986 and 2008), Manila, Philippines (1994), Hyderabad, India (1996 and 2012), Hanoi, Vietnam (2003), and Yogyakarta, Indonesia (2018).

The theme this year will be “Heralding an era of low carbon footprint hybrids” and will explore the effect of rice production on climate change, with a special emphasis on carbon footprint. As rice production is impacted by climate change, the types of inputs and management practices used also contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. IHRS will engage with the various challenges and opportunities for the sustainable application of hybrid rice technologies and methodologies.
